Students Participate in Mock Election
MCHS Students participated in a "Mock Election" that coincides with the national election happening this year. The mock election was coordinated by the TN Secretary of State, Tre Hargett, and had public and private schools all over the state reporting their results. MCHS has held such mock elections in the past, but this is the first year for the school to participate in a state-wide effort.
Students had to be 'registered to vote' by being an official student of MCHS, and had to go to the 'polling location" by logging in to their school email. They had a given time frame that the polls would be open, from 9:30 - 10:00 am on Tuesday, October 29th. After 10:00 am, the polls officially closed.
Student participation mirrored that of the nationwide total, with 277 of 675 students casting their vote. At 41% participation, that aligns with the national average of mid-40's to low 50's for the past several years.
The mock election was an effort by the Secretary of State to raise awareness of civic responsibility among students, and encourage them to take part in making their voice known.
At MCHS, students voted for the presidential race between Donald J. Trump (Republican) and Kamala Harris (Democrat), and for the TN candidates to the US Senate between Marsha Blackburn (Republican) and Gloria Johnson (Democrat). Trump received 231 votes to Harris' 55; Blackburn received 221 votes to 65 for Johnson. In the total of 286 votes cast were 67 seniors, 79 juniors, 53 sophomores, 68 freshmen and 19 faculty / staff members.
The real election polls will take place on Tuesday, November 5th.
