On Thursday, September 12th , MCHS students will be given the opportunity to speak with representatives from colleges, universities, businesses, and organizations. This could be the first step in the selection process of plans for after high school. Students need to take advantage of this time to ask questions and get to know the representatives. These college and university representatives could very well be on selection committees for their respective schools. Listed below are some questions that might be useful in choosing the school for next year.
1. What is the composition of the student body? E.g. how many students; male/female students; commuter vs. residential; etc.
2. Is on-campus housing required for freshmen? What types of housing are available for freshmen?
3. Do students feel safe on campus?
4. What are the types of meal plans? What kind of choices do I have? Is there a Chick-fil-a on campus?
5. What are the requirements for admission? What is the application fee? Will you be waiving application fees during College App Month?
6. What are your admission and scholarship deadlines?
7. What is the process for scholarship applications from your school?
8. What is the last date for an ACT score to be accepted for scholarship purposes – October? December? February?
9. Do you offer a wide variety of majors? Can I easily change from one major to another?
10. What are some of the most popular majors on campus?
11. What is the average class size for freshmen – ratio of student to teacher?
12. What is the neighborhood surrounding the campus like? Is it safe? What is there to do in town?
13. What are some of the recreation facilities and student organizations that will be available? What is the role of sororities/fraternities on campus?
14. What spectator sports do you have on campus? Intramural sports?
15. Is there a doctor, nurse, or counselor available on campus?
16. What is the academic advising system like? How do first year students choose their classes?
17. What is the average tuition per semester at your school?
18. What are the characteristics of your school that make it distinctive?
19. Are students at your school happy? What percentage of your first year students return for their sophomore year?
20. Is it easy for students to get around without a car? Is there a public transportation system? Is walking to class easy?
21. Will my dual enrollment credits transfer?
22. Am I required to bring a laptop or tablet such as an iPad?
23. Are there opportunities for me to get a job on campus?
24. What are the co-op/internship opportunities available?
25. Does your school have a study abroad program?
