Khyla Wade-Warren is among the finalists for the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association’s 36th annual Mr. and Miss Basketball Awards, which will be presented on March 10 at Middle Tennessee State’s Murphy Center.
Players were nominated by coaches and media statewide, with a committee of sports writers selecting the finalists and winners based on their performance during the current season. Academics and character are also taken into consideration during the selection process.
Wade-Warren is the first Lady Bobcat to be honored with the nomination. Wade-Warren is the top scorer among all female players across the state, averaging 23.84 points per game in her senior season. She was selected as All District in her freshman and sophomore years. As a junior, she was named All District, All Region, All West TN, and All State. Wade-Warren has risen to the #2 spot in Total Points Scored during a Career at MCHS with a total of 1,845 points (as of Feb. 11). She trails the #1 scorer and Sports Hall of Famer, Marilyn Gilchrist Kildow at 2,020 by less than 200 points.
Wade-Warren is very humble in her response to the honor. At a schoolwide assembly on Feb. 13, she learned of her finalist status. "I don't even know what to say," said Wade-Warren. "This is crazy. I've always dreamed of being Miss Basketball, but thank you for all the support at all the games and what not. Thanks to my teammates, I couldn't do this without them, thank you to the coaches, Mom, Dad, just thank you everybody. It's an honor."
