Governor's School for Science and Engineering

Greetings from Rocky Top!

I am writing to share with you the latest information about the 2021 Tennessee Governor's School for Science & Engineering (GSSE). This program provides exceptional opportunities for high-achieving rising junior and senior high school students across Tennessee. This program is hosted by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

The application for this program opens on October 1, 2020. Below are the details you'll need to help your students apply. Additional resources can be found online at gsse.utk.edu and the State of Tennessee Governor's School website.

What is the Governor's School for Science & Engineering?

GSSE is a 4-week on-campus program that provides the opportunity for advanced study, laboratory experience, research in modern science and mathematics, and an immersive college experience.

Academic Curriculum

All students take the common "STEM in the morning" classes and their choice of an additional afternoon STEM class that suits their interest. Please visit our academic curriculum site to learn more.

Who can apply?

GSSE is for rising high school juniors and seniors (current sophomores and juniors) in the State of Tennessee.

How many students are selected?

For the 2021 GSSE program, 110 students will be selected for a full scholarship position. A limited number of partially-funded positions will be available to students not selected for one of the 110 full scholarship positions. GSSE funding supports housing, meals, instructional materials, and activities for full scholarship students. A portion of those costs will be covered for partially-funded students.

Virtual vs In-Person

At this time, the 2021 GSSE program has not made a decision on whether the program will be virtual (as it was successfully in 2020) or in-person (as it has been traditionally since 1985). During the application process, students will be asked how they prefer to participate (virtual only, in-person only, or either). To learn more about what the program would look like in-person vs virtual, please visit our website.
